Construction Site Safety Inspection Checklist

Construction
Manufacturing

A jobsite safety walkthrough covering the hazards that cause the most citations: PPE compliance, fall protection above six feet, scaffolding and ladders, housekeeping, electrical cords, equipment condition, and hazard communication.

Who uses it and how often

Used by
Site superintendents, safety officers, and general contractors.
Frequency
Weekly per active site, and after any significant phase change.

What is a construction site inspection?

A construction site inspection (sometimes called a site safety audit or safety walkthrough) is a scheduled review of an active jobsite to find unsafe conditions before they cause an injury. A superintendent, safety officer, or designated lead walks the site with a checklist, records what they see, and assigns corrective actions with owners and deadlines.

It is different from an OSHA or authority inspection: this is your own internal review, done on your schedule, giving you the chance to fix problems before an outsider ever writes them down.

How to inspect a construction site, step by step

Walk during active work

The hazards that matter only exist while crews and equipment are running. Schedule the walkthrough mid-shift, and visit different zones of the site each time so no area is always inspected by the same eyes at the same hour.

Start at the perimeter

Check fencing, gates, and signage before going deep: public protection, site access control, and posted emergency information. A hazard that affects passers-by becomes a liability before it ever touches your crew.

Check work at height

Falls are the dominant risk on most jobsites. Look at guardrails and hole covers on open edges and floors, ladder condition and setup angle, and scaffolding erection tags and full planking. Confirm anyone working above the trigger height is tied off or protected.

Inspect electrical and equipment

Follow the cords: damaged or ungrounded tools, cords across walkways, and missing ground-fault protection in wet areas. Then look at equipment and vehicles: condition, seatbelt use, spotters for reversing machines, and functioning back-up alarms.

Review housekeeping and PPE

Clear walkways and stairs, sorted and stored materials, and removed waste tell you a lot about a site's discipline. Confirm hard hats, eye protection, and high-visibility gear are actually worn — ask a crew member why, rather than only looking.

Document and assign corrections

Photograph every hazard, note the exact location, and assign each corrective action to a named person with a deadline. Re-check open items on the next walkthrough; a hazard that stays open across two visits is a pattern, not an accident.

How to create a construction site checklist

The checklist below is a ready-made version of that structure. Copy it into your account, remove the questions that do not apply to your project, and add the site-specific ones your trade requires.

  • —Base the questions on your site's real hazards: falls, struck-by incidents, electrical contact, and being caught in or between equipment.
  • —Organize questions by site area or project phase — perimeter, excavation, work at height, electrical, equipment — so the walkthrough has a fixed route.
  • —Keep each question binary or scored, so a walkthrough produces a comparable score week over week instead of opinions.
  • —Require a photo for any failed item, so corrections can be verified without returning to the site.
  • —Keep it under about 30 questions. A checklist that takes more than 20 minutes stops being used.
  • —Schedule it weekly per active site, and always after a major phase change such as a new crane, steel erection, or a new subcontractor mobilizing.

How to run this inspection

  1. 01

Log the site, date, and crew size present.

  2. 02

Walk the site during active work, not before or after shift.

  3. 03

Score PPE, fall protection, scaffolding, housekeeping, and electrical safety.

  4. 04

Stop unsafe work immediately and record the corrective action taken.
